'We, Tibetans have reached a certain stage in our struggle where no one can destroy us'
E-mail from readers the world over
Date: Wed, 31 Mar 1999 18:02:26 PST Thanks a lot for putting up a news special on Tibet. I am a Tibetan student and a frequent visitor to your site. You have been putting lots of facts about the Tibetan issue recently and I greatly appreciate it. Thanks to all the people involved, including AK Diwanji, JC Miranda and Dominic Xavier. Though I did try to send my gratitude for the earlier report by Mr Yhaha. The Tibetan cause was thought as dead because we are pitted against a merciless giant and no other country had the guts to annoy China. But the Tibetans have something -- a dynamic leader in the Dalai Lama and a very very rich culture. The Dalai Lama has patiently campaigned for the Tibetan cause over the last few decades and been honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize. I think we have reached a certain stage in our struggle where no one can destroy us. The Chinese think the Tibetan cause will go along with the Dalai Lama who is already 63. But I think they are wrong this time. It gives us immense happiness and encouragement to see that some other people are doing something for our cause. People all over the world, have given lots of support to the cause in recent years and the Chinese are paranoid about this. We shall overcome, we shall overcome some day.

I think Rediff should carry more articles on this issue, especially to bring out the injustices meted to these people and how there has been a complete violation of national and international norms regarding resettlement and rehabilitation by the three state governments involved.

Date: Mon, 5 Apr 1999 12:07:43 +0530 I really appreciate two articles on your site today. One by Virendra Kapoor "Jaya won't tango with Sonia" and the other "A mad-hatter's tea-party" by Arti Dwarkadas. Virendra's political commentary is very precise and Arti's prose is exceptional and witty. Thank you and congratulations on such fine work. Anup Agarwalla
Date: Sun, 4 Apr 1999 15:34:18 -0400 The Vishnu Bhagwat issue is a very sorry tale of our nation's self esteem in the world. Sacking the chief of the navy in the greatest democracy in a dubious manner, is not only scary but also shows India in a very poor light. There should be a speedy enquiry by a retired judge of the apex court into this matter, the terms of reference of which should be decided either by Parliament or by the apex court itself. In no circumstances, should this matter be allowed to become more petrified than it already is. The real culprits should be brought to book immediately, and a precedence set for the future. The government because of reasons unconnected to the country's defence, should not be allowed to dismiss an honourable soldier. Likewise, if proved guilty, an egomaniacal officer, should not be allowed to go unpunished. Come whatever, let us get into this business as early as possible, and set our house in order. Let the nation and its people know what is the real thing! Rajnikant
Date: Thu, 01 Apr 1999 19:57:47 -0800 This article reveals the true face of an officer who is blinded by his selfish motive and misguided by his ineptness as a naval officer. He is a master craftsman who is exploiting politicians to his (and their) advantage. Imagine, what will happen if all dismissals and un-granting of extensions are challenged in a court and dragged to the floor of Parliament. The democratic rights of an individual cannot be given such a wide latitude. We, living abroad, abhor the attempts of this man to vitiate the name of George Fernandes, who is doing so much for the soldiers in the front. His patriotism should remain unquestioned. We need more such politicians who are not corrupt. I would like to compliment General Mehta for his article.

Date: Thu, 01 Apr 1999 19:25:07 +0200 I think it's a wonderful thing to be issued PIO cards. Please let me know when and how will they be issued.
Date: Wed, 7 Apr 1999 15:15:35 +0530 Well said Harsha. Pakistan is one of the three teams to be watched. They have a captain who has ambition, who has fire in his belly, can pull his team to great heights, can inspire the team by his own performance and presence. Akram is a god sent boon to Pakistan. He is unlike some subcontinent captains who have no on-field presence, who themselves cannot perform. To win the World Cup, you need to have great captains. These teams have it. Pakistan, South Africa and West Indies. You can include India as the probables of winning the cup, because of the following odd ones in the team -- Sachin, Agarkar and Khurasia. Believe me India will win the cup, if and only if someone gives a stand to Sachin, that responsibility lies on Ganguly and Robin Singh. Azhar or no Azhar, it makes no difference to the team. On the contrary, I would say he is a liability. May God be with us and some good sense prevail on Azhar.
Sent: Wednesday, March 31, 1999 7:41 PM Prem, You are the only person whom I think can wage a campaign to exclude Azhar from the team. He is a very demotivating factor on the team and I feel that he should not be retained as captain. Please do something or we will lose the World Cup. Ashish Bisariya
Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 14:51:57 +0530 It was a terrific interview. We just loved it. Please include some more pictures and interviews because we just love Manoj. He is great. Pranjalee and Prajakta
Date: Wed, 31 Mar 1999 18:48:22 -0800 (PST) In the South, Rama is neither heroic nor fair. Ravana is the hero out there. Rama, a wimp. Is that the role you want to play? No, I want to play Rama as the hero. But a different kind of hero. The dark, battling hero full of his own uncertainties.
1. What kind of question was that from Pritish Nandy?
Date: Wed, 31 Mar 1999 13:35:47 +0000 What do you mean by, most of us don't have a clue about 'what times were like during World War II?' That's for people like you who look towards Hollywood for inspiration, slavish and blinded. I know that around 55 million (that's the figure they give) people lost their lives in five years, just goes to show the atrocities the Europeans had committed against each other; atrocities that would have made even the beast of the earth amazed. Open your neocolonial eyes and you wouldn't have to look towards Hollywood. Do you have a clue that 60 million native Indians were wiped off the face of this earth by the so-called humanitarian. It seems as though Rediff enlightment is Hollywood.
