India will sign CTBT if its security concerns are addressed: US team

After meeting several Indian leaders, a US congressional delegation has gathered the impression that New Delhi is prepared to sign the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty provided its security concerns are addressed to its satisfaction.

''There is a clear desire on the part of India to sign the CTBT... But there are a variety of issues to be addressed first,'' Richard A Gephardt, leader of the delegation, told the media today. The other members of the delegation were also present.

Gephardt agreed that the nuclear issue was being discussed seriously between the two countries. However, he felt that the relationship between the two largest democracies should not be held hostage to one or two issues.
