Women's panel deputes team to probe nuns' rape in MP

The National Commission for Women has appointed a two-member committee to visit Navapara village in Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh to investigate the reported gang-rape of four nuns on Wednesday.

The team, consisting of doctors Indira Basavaraj and Syeda Saiyidain Hameed, will leave tomorrow for Navapara.

Expressing shock and outrage over the heinous incident, the Commission deplored the fact that women's safety and security were accorded the lowest priority in society today. Some 213 NCW recommendations, several of them pertaining to rape, were languishing with the government, the commission alleged.

The most vulnerable sections were targeted and culprits allowed to go scot-free. The Commission has urged the Madhya Pradesh government to nab all the culprits and ensure that the victims are provided immediate relief.

It has expressed deep sympathy with the victims as well as members of the church who were engaged in works of charity and public service.

On a recent visit, the NCW had pointed out to the Madhya Pradesh government that the state topped the list as far as atrocities against women were concerned.

The NCW, along with members of the state women's commission, met the governor, chief minister and senior state government officers.
