Bandh in TN village following desecration of statue

Normal life was affected at Usilampatti in Tamil Nadu's Madurai district on Thursday, following a bandh call by the Piramalai Kallar Peravai in protest against the recent desecration of the Muthuramalinga Thevar statue at Virudhunagar.

Shops and business establishments downed shutters. Bus services to Usilampatti were suspended.

Meanwhile, the indefinite fast by Peravai leader Murugan and four others, demanding Pudhiya Tamizhagam leader and legislator Dr Krishnaswamy's arrest entered the fourth day, police sources said.

Local MLA P N Vallarasu is holding talks with Murugan to persuade him to call off his fast.
