Naxals blow up Gandhi's statue

Naxalites belonging to the 'Red Tigers' faction blew up a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Kosgi town in Mahbubnagar district of Andhra Pradesh last evening.

The police said the extremists, who have called for a boycott of the Gandhi Jayanti (birth anniversary) celebrations on October 2, left a note threatening to blow up the Mahatma's statue in the state assembly premises if the government does not replace it with a Telugu Talli (Telugu Motherland) statue.

The Bharatiya Janata Party, the Congress, and the ruling Telugu Desam Party organised demonstrations in the town condemning the incident.

N Surya Narayana, Kosgi's representative in the state assembly, said a new statue would be installed at the same site.
