Hegde changes tack, backs Rabri's dismissal

Union Commerce Minister Ramakrishna Hegde today retracted his earlier opposition to the move to dismiss Rabri Devi's government in Bihar and said he would abide by the Union Cabinet's decision.

Talking to newsmen in Bangalore, Hegde said there was no question of opposing the prime minister's views in this matter.

Hegde could not attend the Cabinet meeting as he was not keeping well. Hence, he had faxed to the prime minister his opinion on invoking Article 356 of the Constitution.

Today, Hegde clarified, "Whatever may be my reading of the situation, in a Cabinet system it is the majority view that gets carried. I am a democrat and fully believe in the system of collective responsibility."

Asked what his party, the Lok Shakti's stand is on the use of the provision, Hegde said he would discuss it with his colleagues.
