IMF set to resume lending to Pakistan

The International Monetary Fund has agreed to resume the suspended loan facility to cash-strapped Pakistan, sources said.

The IMF is waiting for the green signal from New York where, during talks with American President Bill Clinton, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief is expected to promise that Pakistan will sign the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

Much will depend on the outcome of the talks. Sharief is expected to announce the signing of the treaty in the General Assembly after getting a categorical assurance from Clinton that the sanctions imposed against Pakistan in the wake of its nuclear tests in May will be lifted.
