Senior Assam cops escape ambush by Bodos

Deputy Inspector General of Police (western range) B B Misra and Additional Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar escaped an attempt on their lives even as clashes between Bodos and Santhals continued in the past 24 hours.

The officers were leading a police party to the trouble-torn areas when Bodo militants opened fire with sophisticated weapons near Jemagaon village. The police returned the fire. Bloodstains at the scene indicated some injuries on the militants' side, police sources said.

Meanwhile, miscreants burnt down 60 houses in Reshamguri area and 10 houses in Balimari village. They also tried to burn a vital wooden bridge near Jemagaon to disrupt the movement of police forces, but were thwarted.

The district authorities have requested redeployment of the army to control the situation. For the time being, additional police forces are being sent to the violence-hit areas.
