Date sent: Mon, 14 Sep 1998 14:10:25 -0700 A largely fair and detailed column that excludes no misconduct on either side of the rivalling Indian parties. The question remains as to how the Indian government and the public alike will take this note seriously, and begin the long-awaited industrialisation process. Also, far more importantly, the building of national identity in the north-east can only take place with economic benefits for the population. New Delhi has relied on corrupt bureaucrats for too long.
Date sent: Mon, 14 Sep 1998 11:46:11 -0500 Reading Ashok Mitra on your site makes me ever more thankful that Communists are not part of the Central government. I hope and pray that the voter would be sensible enough to keep the leftists' ideas confined to their politburos, and as far away from serious policy-making as possible. Sandeep Shouche
Date sent: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 23:00:21 -0400 What is this guy Ashok Mitra talking about? The point is what the nation can do to end terrorism and give justice to the the victims of terrorism, both Hindus and Muslims or anyone else alike. Let not religion divide us. Vedas are the common inheritance of mankind and teach that humanity is one family. So, let us feel the pain of the innocents and build public opinion against terrorism in the name of Islamic jihad which has caused widespread bloodshed throughout the world. According to recent reports Taliban-supported 'Afghan' terrorists have been responsible for the butchery of 60,000 civilians in Algeria. It is shocking. More than 25,000 of our brothers in Kashmir and surrounding areas have been murdered, and the resulting terror has caused the mass exodus of some 300, 000 civilians -- most of whom are still living as refugees in a miserable condition. It is shameful that Rediff prints such articles. Is Mitra a communist or what?
Date sent: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 10:11:05 +0800 Anyone can write articles like you. Don't think you have made history by writing this article. Everyone knows the plight of the neglected north-eastern states and Kashmir. But that does not mean you have to recommend the fragmentation of India. Your wish (maybe thinking) will never come true. Rediff should stop publishing articles like this one.

Date sent: Tue, 14 Jul 1998 11:59:26 -0500 Nani Palkhivala's views are the echoes of many Indian nationals living abroad. It is no secret (and I'm ashamed to say that) to admit that because of caste-based politics and reservations, most of us chose to make our careers away from our motherland. That is because the system as such doesn't respect merit. All our politicians in the last 50 years failed to effect any progress at all. What is worse is that we lack the courage to admit out failures, and the basic common sense to adopt the strategies of the most developed countries. Most of our brethren lack civic sense. I think people are so frustrated that they just can't attempt an attitude change. Srinivas Ganti
Date sent: Fri, 28 Aug 1998 13:13:34 -0700 You have written: "Gandhi did say that and remained loyal to that belief until he was betrayed by the Congress leadership with the threat of another civil war in India if Jinnah was allowed to become the first prime minister. It was, therefore, not Gandhi who accepted Partition but the Congress leadership. Gandhi felt betrayed, did not want to witness another bloodbath and decided to devote the rest of his life to bringing peace between Hindus and Muslims." Are you trying to say that we should credit Gandhi for leading us and the Congress to Independence and not blame him for Partition because "Congress leaders don't listen to me anymore?" Do you see a reasoning of convenience there? Popular opinion was that Patel be made the PM of independent India, but then there was someone who always favoured Nehru. Now you would say that Gandhi was not aware of such a perception? If he was so moved by millions of Hindus massacred in Pakistan, why did he not try his fast unto death there? Why did he do a fast unto death when Hindus retaliated? If I come to your house, plunder and destroy everything, and someone advises you restraint, will you keep quiet? Sir, the problem is, there are two kinds of megalomaniacs in this world. One being the Hitler kind, and I am no way comparing Gandhi to him. Gandhi was a rare breed. The kind who wanted to be the sole arbiter of both Hindus and Muslims. He wanted to be more of a kingmaker. And, Sir, please step out and see for yourself. Anyone who has some depth of understanding, will agree with my opinion. And that is the popular opinion today. If you guys stop basking in the glory of Gandhi, may be people will start respecting him for his virtues. If you keep making him the demigod, and make Godse a villain, you will only lose the public sympathy for Gandhi. Doesn't that explain the milling crowds in Bombay, for Dalvi's play? Sameer
Date: Tue, 01 Sep 1998 10:28:48 -0400 Wake up, rise and smell the coffee. Oh! politicians of India. Ever since I had the ability to read and understand, the only conglomerate or a company to have commanded respect among fellow Indians were the Tatas. In every industry they have ventured in, they have contributed to this great nation of ours. Why is that our politicians fail to understand this? We do not need our government to run airlines, build machinery, or manufacture cars. Let the government be involved in governing and let the industrialists do their jobs.
Date sent: Wed, 29 Apr 1998 08:30:40 -0500 It's an article which provokes rather than justifies its claims. Okay, Bangalore has its shortcomings. What do you have to say about Hyderabad? Contrast each shortcoming you find in Bangalore with that in Hyderabad and justify your conclusion.
Date sent: Tue, 28 Apr 1998 17:06:55 -0400 Over all, a well-researched article. A bit partial. Should have provided a view of Pune, Bombay and Delhi as well.
