23 Hurriyat leaders arrested

The Jammu and Kashmir police on Friday resorted to lathicharge and arrested about 23 All Party Kashmir Hurriyat Conference leaders, including chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani, for violating prohibitory orders at the historic Lal Chowk in Srinagar.

The APKHC workers had gathered to stage a demonstration in protest against the alleged atrocities by security forces in the valley and Doda district.

At least half a dozen leaders, including Javid Ahmad Mir, were injured in the incident.

The police had to burst teargas shells to disperse the gathering.

Shops, educational institutions and business establishments in Srinagar remained closed on the APKHC's hartal call. Work in government offices and banks was affected.
