Congress take Left support for granted, says CPI

E-Mail this report to a friend The Congress cannot take the Left parties' support for granted in its bid to capture power at the Centre in the event of the collapse of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government, Communist Party of India national secretary D Raja has said.

Talking to newspersons in Madras, Raja said the Congress should be willing to undergo a transformation in its ideology and approach to economic policies. However, no such introspection was evident at the recently concluded Congress meet at Pachmarhi, he added.

Raja said the Left parties would deliberate and evolve a common approach towards the formation of a secular democratic government at the Centre.

Asked about opposition from the Forward Bloc and the Revolutionary Socialist Party on backing any government at the Centre in which the Congress participated, he said: "We will discuss this issue thoroughly."

Asked whether the Left parties would support a Congress-led government if the All India Anna DMK was part of it, Raja parried the question, saying the AIADMK need not be part of the government.

Asked whether Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was moving closer to the BJP, he said he was certain that the DMK and BJP did not share the same ideology.
