BJP to campaign against statehood for Pondi

The Bharatiya Janata Party's Pondicherry unit will launch a campaign against granting statehood to the Union territory from September 10 to 25.

State BJP president A M Krishnamurthy told newsmen that the party would collect signatures and submit memorandums to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Home Minister L K Advani during their visit to Madras on September 15 to participate in the Marumalarchi DMK conference, demanding that Pondicherry be allowed to remain a Union territory till special category status is conferred.

The BJP state executive committee had already adopted a resolution to this effect and had apprised the party high command about it, he added.
