Pak shells kill six more in Kargil

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Six people, including five soldiers, were killed and 13 others injured in Jammu and Kashmir's Kargil sector when Pakistani troops continued heavy shelling.

Thousands of people have fled their homes.

A top police source said the soldiers were killed, and six others injured, when a shell hit a passing army vehicle at a village, 14 kilometres from Kargil, on Friday evening.

However, a defence spokesman, though admitting that a vehicle was hit, claimed there were no casualties in the incident. An armyman was killed and three others injured in other incidents, he said.

Kargil Senior Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar told Rediff On The NeT that a woman, identified as Zenab, was killed and four civilians injured in intense shelling on 10 border villages. These include Goma, Pashkun, Tharunsa and Kaksar.

Kargil town, the officer said, was more or less deserted. And so are the neighbouring villages.

"Only one male member in the villages has stayed back to look after the house and livestock," he said.

He said Pakistani troops rained shells in and around Kargil till late Friday. Nearly 300 shells hit the villages.

Police reinforcements have been rushed to the area to provide medical aid and protect the property of those who have fled.
