Panel okays proxy voting for defence staff

The high-powered four-member group of secretaries has cleared the proposal on permitting proxy voting for the armed forces personnel, a defence ministry spokesman said today.

The proposal will now go to the Union Cabinet after a Cabinet note is prepared.

The panel, comprising defence, home, personnel and legislative affairs secretaries was set up on August 27 at the initiative of Defence Minister George Fernandes.

The high-level meeting, chaired by the defence minister, was attended by Brajesh Mishra, principal secretary to the prime minister, Defence Secretary Ajit Kumar, Home Secretary B P Singh, Secretary (legislative affairs) Dr Raghuvir Singh, Secretary (personnel) Arvind Verma and Deputy Election Commissioner Subas Pani.

Fernandes has expressed hope that the facility of proxy voting be made available to the armed forces personnel for the coming assembly elections in four states later this year.
