Aren't Muslims Indians? ... Not those who don't understand that in a democracy majority opinion is to be respected, and cannot be sacrificed at the cost of appeasing minority opinion. But surely those like Dr Abdul Kalam, who made every Indian proud of scientific achievement. Those like the legendary Mohammad Rafi who could render any song with great ease and effectiveness. In fact, I'm ashamed of calling (so-called) leaders like Laloo or Mulayam as Indians, although they are Hindus.
Date sent: Mon, 31 Aug 1998 17:34:22 -0500 In response to the following article: The shankaracharyas of Puri and the so-called religious heads are the main reasons that Hinduism has been kept in the background, and Hindus away from the strengths of the religion. They are the foundation of the feeling of 'The Weak Hindu' being spread around. Have the shankaracharyas ever reached out to the poor and the ignorant, or have they reached out to every household in the nation with the message of Hinduism like Adi Shankaracharya or Swami Vivekanand have done? Swami Vivekanand taught the Hindu to follow his religion, be strong, take pride in it and to fight against any insults against Hinduism or the nation. At the same time help the poor, ignorant and the less privileged. Shri Advani helped the Hindus regain their slowly diminishing pride and reached out to every household in the nation. The shankaracharyas would love to see all Hindus as ascetics, rather than seeing them as industrialists and warriors. The problem with the shankaracharyas is their EGO. They cannot see anybody else getting popularity. As per Hinduism, this 'EGO' is man's worst enemy. Prashant
Date sent: Mon, 31 Aug 1998 15:38:12 -0400 I don't know how these people -- the Gandhis (Rajiv, Sonia) without any knowledge of the country, are chosen as Congress presidents by spineless Congressmen. I feel there are many reasons for this: One thing is, leaders like Arjun Singh, Dhawan etc who do not have any mass base, but the blessings of the Gandhi family (in fact Nehru's) are pushing for their candidature. They know there is no future for them without the Gandhis. The other fence-sitters, don't want to experiment. They hope to cash on votes by evoking the Gandhi sentiment. Any Congress leader who supports Sonia does not have any ideology except to be in power by serving the Gandhi family, not the country. Otherwise, how can they hand over the leadership of the party to an Italian born-politically naive Sonia, who does not even have the slightest knowledge of India. In the long run, a party will succeed only if it is led by leaders who are experienced and come from the grass root level. Venkat
Date sent: Mon, 31 Aug 1998 12:09:15 -0500 Mr Darryl D'Monte makes some good points in his article on preserving the heritage sites at Elephanta and Jogeshwari. However, what has this got to do with the party affiliations of the current state government?? Does he mean to say that it was hunky-dory till the Congress was in power and all hell broke loose the moment Shiv Sena and BJP took over?? Does the author have to display his partisan preferences even in an issue where politics can be conveniently left out. Sandeep Shouche

But I still strongly believe that they are terrorists and terrorists shouldn't be glorified. Godse had so may reasons for killing the Mahatma, but is it justified?

Date sent: Sun, 30 Aug 1998 23:56:59 EDT As a former air hostess for Air India, my sympathies are with the women. In my years with them we were not allowed to continue flying once married. I'm glad to see that has changed. A man at fifty eight is no more capable of performing his job than a woman of that age. She should be allowed equal opportunity for promotion to in-flight supervisory positions, if she has the experience and qualifications. A male purser in the role of a supervisor has nothing extra going for him than a woman. It's the ability of the individual that counts, not the gender . Wake up Air India and join the rest of the world as we enter a new millennium! Today, at 45, I am the single mother of a twenty-year-old college student, have my own business and look and perform better than a lot of my male peers. Wishing the air hostesses my best -- Go ladies, don't give up. Hema Shasta
Date sent: Sun, 30 Aug 1998 18:36:44 +0800 If the BJP cannot move forward, it can be excused but if they try to shield the guilty and cover corruption, the nation will not forgive them. Nobody is going to tolerate that. It must as clear as that.
Date sent: Sat, 29 Aug 1998 21:16:53 EDT Why instead of looking at it straight, the matter is viewed with a cross sight? It is misleading to suggest that the finance ministry is slighted. In any efficient administration, before the teams of visionary bureaucrats are put in place for implementing a governing party or coalition's agenda, the top leader has to coordinate the economic, scientific, or intelligence councils. Date: Wed, 05 Aug 1998 17:52:39 -0400 If the government and ministers are ready to accept mistakes and learn from them, they deserve many more chances. India does not have a school for ministers, where they can learn the duties demanded out of each ministry. Only way one can improve is, by learning and avoiding past mistakes. People like Sinha, Advani, Hegde who are taking continuous actions to correct the mistakes in finance, home affairs, import, export policies, IT policy etc, while being honest about the little that has been achieved in past 100 days, deserve more time and patience. There is no point in saying this government lacks the experience in government. One needs to break the media created myth that only the Congress has mastered the art of governance. Breaking every democratic institution, imposing tough tax laws, creating a rigid License Raj -- where only lazy and few industrialists profited by selling third rate products, neglecting the population growth, never learning from past mistakes, deep rooted corruption, gross neglect of infrastructure, negligence of border infiltration, instability etc., these are the gifts the so called "Experienced-in- Governance" Congress gave us. Several other nations whose condition was hopeless than that of India when we got our freedom, are now more prosperous. So enough of the governing experience of the Congress. Thanks to Mr Nandy for bringing this creative criticism of this government.
Date: Fri, 28 Aug 1998 23:29:17 +0530 If you could include technical charts (eg. MACD, RSI, ROC) along with the report that could be very helpful. Also, if trading rates of at least the A group shares can be put in a tabular form, it would add a lot of value to your report. Sunil
Date: Sat, 22 Aug 1998 09:05:53 -0400 Is it not a perpetual question about bringing change in India? I hope the government releases control and lets the industry and business take a lead in changing the nation. Navin
Date: Sat, 15 Aug 1998 10:05:07 -0400 Jacking up the fairs to show profit, is a very Indian-looking business tact, mastered over 40 years by lazy old industrialists. Indian Airlines did it with government approval. The government's interest may be in artificially jacking up IA shares and then wash off its hand off the inefficient airline once it gets a good price. The question is, who would go by such a high price?? If any airline survives in India without official protection in todays competitive environment, it will be one which reduces costs and makes air travel affordable and does not increase prices. The fact is, may be not today but within the next 2 to 5 years, the government will have to throw the public sector open in the private market, and these companies will survive only if they adopt an innovative approach. I guess, the government is justified to do whatever it takes to raise the share prices before selling these companies. But such efforts to block competition could not be tolerated for long. The present disinvestment deadline is approaching very fast. The media should closely monitor any moves to extend such a deadline for ever.
