The glad saga of a pregnant lady

Champa Kali doesn't know the name of the man who got her into trouble. But in trouble, she is -- there's no doubting that. And pretty far gone, too, by the look of her.

Luckily for Kali, her employers are a kindly lot. They understand the compulsions of a mother, they comprehend the pangs of labour. And, hence, has granted Kali maternity leave, thus making our heroine a sort of celebrity.

Kali, you see, is an elephant. The first one to be given time off for pregnancy.

Our heroine works for the Uttar Pradesh forest department, at the Dudhwa National Park. Beginning with her, the state has decided to sanction maternity leave for all pregnant elephants.

Meanwhile, Kali is taking it easy. And waiting -- a trifle impatiently, it must be mentioned -- for D-day to arrive.
