7 TDP men killed in CPI-Naxalite attackSeven workers of the ruling Telugu Desam Party in Andhra Pradesh were killed in an attack carried out jointly by Naxalites and Communist Party of India activists in Konganapalli village of Anantapur district. The assailants then went on the rampage, setting ablaze a dozen houses in the village. Police said in Hyderabad that extremists of the People's War Group (Kondapalli Seetaramaiah faction) and CPI activists (of the Keshav group) went today to the house of B Harischandrappa, mandal praja parishad (block council) president, who belongs to the TDP, and speared two party activists to death. Five other TDP workers were set ablaze. The assailants also used bombs in the attack. Tension prevailed in the village following the attack, which was in retaliation for the killing of a CPI sympathiser, in January. Police cordoned off the village, with top officers camping there. Four fire tenders were rushed from nearby Guntakal town to control the blaze. UNI |
