E-Mail this report to a friend

Crack police commandos destroyed a major Tamil rebel base in eastern Sri Lanka today, killing at least ten militants and raising the number of rebels cadres killed in one week to about 50, officials said.

Military officials said special task force commandos, backed by artillery and air force, destroyed a major base of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, known by the number 24, in the Kanjikuduchchiaru jungles in Ampara district.

At least ten rebels were killed, while the rest fled, they added.

A military spokesman said troops killed 36 more militants in scattered operations in the north and east and recovered arms and explosives. He said 39 soldiers were wounded in the clashes.
