Death toll in Karnataka rains touches 195

E-Mail this report to a friend

The continuing torrential downpour in Karnataka claimed 23 more lives since Wednesday night, taking the toll in rain-related incidents to 195 since the onset of monsoon.

With river Bhama in spate, more than 500 people of Kadabul village in Gulbarga district are marooned.

Reports received at the police headquarters said Bijapur district accounted for 16 deaths. Of this, 15 were due to house collapses. Five deaths -- three due to house collapse and two by drowning -- were reported from Gulbarga.

Bangalore city and Bangalore rural district accounted for one death each in house collapses.

In Gulbarga, more than 500 people are stranded at an elevated place as river Bhama overflowed following a heavy discharge from the Ujini reservoir in Maharastra.

Deputy Commissioner Anil Kumar Zha said efforts are on to provide them food packets using mechanised boats. There was no cause for alarm as the river was receding, he added.
