Andhra rains claim 21 livesWith 21 more deaths reported, the toll in rain-related incidents in Andhra Pradesh has risen to 51, even as heavy rains continued to lash many parts of the state for the third consecutive day. Seven deaths were reported from Kurnool and six from Karimnagar. Three each came from Anantapur and Hyderabad, and one each from East Godavari and Chittoor districts. Revenue Minister T Devender Goud said that standing crops of sunflower, cotton, groundnut and paddy were damaged in over 78,000 hectares. Nearly 1,000 families were evacuated from low-lying areas in Nellore town. Relief camps were also opened at Punganuru and Palamaner in Chittoor districts. Meanwhile, the weather office said that heavy rainfall would occur at a few places in the state during the next 48 hours. Heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Konkan, Goa, Central Maharashtra, North Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kserala and Lakshadweep during the same period. Rain or thundershowers are likely at most places in Andhra Pradesh, coastal Karnataka and Kerala, at many places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Konkan, Goa, Central Maharashtra, North Tamil Nadu, interior Karnataka and Lakshadweep, at a few places in sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Orissa, Gujarat, Marathwada, Vidarbha and South Tamil Nadu, and at isolated places in Madhya Pradesh. Mainly dry weather will prevail over the rest of the country. The Southwest monsoon has been vigorous in coastal Andhra Pradesh and active in Kerala. Rain or thundershowers occurred at most places in Telangana and Rayalseema, at many places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Central Maharashtra, Marathwada, south interior Karnataka and Lakshadweep, at a few places in Orissa, East Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and coastal and north interior Karnataka, and at isolated places in Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Sikkim and East Madhya Pradesh. Mainly dry weather prevailed over the rest of the country. Day temperatures were markedly above normal in parts of Assam and Meghalaya and were appreciably above normal in Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar and in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir, West Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. They were above normal in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, East Rajasthan, north central Maharashtra and Vidarbha. Night temperatures were markedly above normal in parts of East Uttar Pradesh, West Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, and appreciably above normal in parts of Assam and Meghalaya, West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar plateau, West Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Saurashtra and Kutch. They were above normal in parts of Haryana and in the remaining parts of East Uttar Pradesh, Saurashtra and Kutch.
