Rains claim 20 lives in Kerala

Heavy rains lashed Kerala for the fifth consecutive day, claiming at least 20 lives and causing widespread damage to property and crops.

Most rivers are in spate. Hundreds of families have been evacuated.

Five deaths each were reported in Thiruvananthapuram and Malappuram districts, four in Pathanamthitta, three in Ernakulam, two in Kollam and one in Thrissur.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Konkan and Goa, south central Maharashtra, coastal Andhra Pradesh, interior Karnataka and Lakshadweep during the next 48 hours.

Rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places in Telangana, Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu, and at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, sub-himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and north central Maharashtra.

Mainly dry weather will prevail over the rest of the country.

Besides Kerala, the Southwest monsoon has also been active in coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Rain or thundershowers occurred at most places in south interior Karnataka, at many places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Konkan and Goa, Rayalaseema, coastal Karnataka and Lakshadweep, at a few places in sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Saurashtra and Kutch, Central Maharashtra, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and north interior Karnataka, and at isolated places in Orissa and Madhya Pradesh.

Very light rain also occurred at isolated places in Gujarat and Vidarbha.

Mainly dry weather prevailed over the rest of the country.
