Chairmen of state minorities commissions will meet in Bangalore in the last week of December or early January next in Bangalore to assess, among other things, the status of minorities in different states.

Chairmen of minorities commissions from Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal would attend the meet to interact on issues concerning minorities in their respective states and also at the national level, Karnataka state minority commission chairman Qamrul Islam told newsmen in Hyderabad today.

Dr Tahir Mahamud, chairman of the National Minorities Commission will inaugurate the conference.

Islam, who was in the city to study the working of the Andhra Pradesh minorities welfare department, said he would submit an action plan to the state government for the overhaul development of minorities in his state on October 26.

The action plan would highlight various issues for the development of minorities explaining their socio-economic and educational status.

The report was prepared after 12 sittings with several minorities organisations, with the help of an expert committee comprising five retired IAS officials.

Islam said he would adopt whatever was good in Andhra Pradesh minorities welfare department. The Karnataka government had already decided to set up such a department in that state.
