Allies demand urgent steps to curb prices

E-Mail this report to a friend

The coalition partners of the Bharatiya Janata Party today took the government to task for the spiralling prices of various commodities, mainly onions, and directed it to take effective measures, including imports, to tackle the situation.

The allies expressed serious concern about the price rise and the plight of farmers at the much-awaited co-ordination committee meeting that also took stock of the economic and security scenario and international issues.

Briefing reporters after the two-hour meeting at the prime minister's residence, committee convener Jaswant Singh said issues like expansion of the Cabinet and dismissal of the Rabri Devi government in Bihar did not figure.

Agriculture Minister Surjit Singh Barnala told the meeting that adequate quantity of onions would be imported and the first consignment would land at the Bombay docks on October 14.
