E-Mail this report to a friend

The Karnataka government will initiate legal proceedings to take over the Mysore palace under the Mysore Palace Acquisition and Transfer Act 1998, which received the President's assent recently, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M C Nanaiah said Monday.

Speaking to the media in Bangalore, he said the Centre handed over the approved bill to Chief Minister J H Patel and himself during their recent visit to New Delhi.

The President had given his assent on August 28, but the Centre had not intimated the state, the law minister said.

The Act provides for the payment of Rs 320 million as compensation to the legal heirs of the Mysore royal family, including its scion, Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wodeyar.

A trust, with Wodevar as a member, would be formed to manage the palace and its belongings.

Nanaiah said a commissioner would be appointed shortly to settle the claims on the palace.
