No-confidence motion against AGP coalition

E-Mail this report to a friend

The first no-confidence motion against the Asom Gana Parishad-led four party coalition government was admitted in the Assam assembly Monday.

The motion assumes significance following the coalition's failure to win even one of the two seats in last week's by-election. Jointly sponsored by the Congress and the United Minority Front, it alleges that the government failed on all fronts.

The Congress made it clear that it would go all out against the coalition government.

Speaker Ganesh Kutum, admitting the motion, announced that the time and date for discussion would be declared after a meeting of the business advisory committee.

Although the AGP-led government has the required strength to sail through, the role of Bodo MLAs and disgruntled AGP members could make a difference.

The AGP and its allies have 70 MLAs in the 126-member assembly. The Congress and UMF have only 38 MLAs.

The Congress is buoyed by its victory in the Udharbond constituency as well as AGP's humiliating defeat in Bhabanipur at the hand of the People's Democratic Front candidate.
