Congress establishes lead in ChhattisgarhThe Congress has emerged victorious in the Chhattisgarh region of Madhya Pradesh, leaving its principal rival Bharatiya Janata Party in a state of confusion over the creation of the new state of Chhattisgarh. Chief Electoral Officer A K Vijayvargiya said today that the Congress secured 46 of the 90 assembly seats in the proposed Chhattisgarh state, leaving the BJP far behind with 33 seats. The BJP was hopeful of getting a majority in the region following the creation of a railway zone at Bilaspur and a promise of clearing the bill for the new state during the winter session of Parliament. An exit poll had predicted that the BJP would get 50-odd seats of the region. The Bahujan Samaj Party secured three seats in the tribal areas of Chhattisgarh while Independents and other parties captured another three. UNI
