BSF, Rangers agree to cease firing on border
At last, peace appears set to return along the India-Pakistan border. The Border Security Force and the Pakistani Rangers have agreed to cease firing immediately all along the border. BSF Inspector-General (Jammu Frontier) U C Chhabra said the understanding was reached at a meeting with the Rangers in Lahore, Pakistan, from November 17 to 19. Chhabra said each side complained of unprovoked firing by the other. Peasants in the border areas have suffered the most on account of this firing, as they have been unable to cultivate their fields. According to IG Chhabra, it was also decided that there would be no firing in the event of flag meetings. Moreover, both sides agreed to cooperate in curbing smuggling across the border. The Indian delegation was headed by A S Aulack, inspector-general (Punjab range). Major General Salim-ud-Din led the Rangers. UNI |
