Power by chopper

The Power Grid Corporation of India on Wednesday launched the emergency erection system, meant to restore electric supply speedily in areas hit by natural calamity.

Talking to the media after a demonstration at Dehgam, 32 kilometres from Ahemdabad, PGCI (western region) Executive Director D K Nandi said the system uses helicopters to transport electric poles to affected sites. This would save a lot of time.

The corporation had, so far, been using the conventional way of transporting poles by road.

Nandi said the ERS could be very useful in India in times of natural calamities. It could also be utilised to prevent possible collapse of towers. For this, the PGCI has special disaster-managing teams at strategic points.

At present, the corporation is operating nearly 32,000-km-long extra high voltage system.
