3 foreign mercenaries shot dead in Kupwara

E-Mail this report to a friend

Security personnel have killed three foreign militants in the frontier district of Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, a fierce encounter is going on at Hyderapora on the outskirts of Srinagar since morning.

Official sources said the state police task force, assisted by the army, cordoned off the Hyderapora bypass to nab militants and sympathisers. When the area was being sealed, militants opened fire with automatic weapons. Security forces retaliated.

The clash is still going on when reports last came in.

Residents of the area told journalists on telephone that they heard a loud explosion followed by heavy firing.

A defence spokesman said the three militants were killed in the Neilpora forests Sunday evening. Two AK 56 rifles, one pistol, four magazines and 20 grenades were recovered from them.
