TDP also calls for CMs' meeting to discuss price-rise

The Telugu Desam Party has urged Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to convene a meeting of chief ministers to tackle the price rise of essential commodities and take remedial measures to control the situation.

Party spokesman C Ramachandraiah, who is also a Rajya Sabha Member, in a letter addressed to the prime minister said the prices of essential commodities had reached an unprecedented levels and it had been fuelled by scarcity, subjecting the common man to misery.

The Telugu Desam is the second ally of the BJP, other than the Trinamul Congress, which has voiced its concerns about the price rise.

Ramachandraiah said any delay in convening the meeting would erode the credibility of the government, and there should be no doubts on the sincerity of the government in tackling the problem, he felt.

He said the recent measures taken by the Centre in allowing the imports and reducing the import duties on certain essential commodities were insufficient to meet the challenge, and the administration should asses the enormity of the problem faced by the people. Hence a meeting of chief ministers had to be convened to tackle the problem jointly.
