ELECTIONS '98
|
Big lead for Left Front in Bengal panchayat pollsThe ruling Left Front in West Bengal maintained a sizeable lead over its main rival, the Trinamul Congress-Bharatiya Janata Party combine, in the countryside as results of the three-tier panchayat election continued to pour in. Of about 12,850 seats declared so far, the Front won 7,500. Though occupying the second position as counting progressed, the Trinamul Congress-BJP combine has been able to make a dent in some of the Left Front strongholds, bagging 3,700 seats so far. The Congress, with 1,650 seats, has been relegated to the third place. |
