Woman injured in Pak firing

A woman was injured in firing from across the border in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch sector on Tuesday evening.

Elsewhere in the state, three militants were among the five killed in the past 24 hours.

Security forces averted a major tragedy and arrested five militants. Another militant surrendered, an official spokesman said.

He said Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing on Indian positions in Poonch. The injured woman has been admitted to hospital.

The spokesman, however, could not confirm if the Indian troops retaliated.

He said an unidentified body was recovered at village Gura in Poonch on Tuesday evening. Though militants, security forces and village defence committee members exchanged fire there, no one none was hurt.

The spokesman said security forces gunned down two militants at Sendhar-Gala. Another was killed at the Buda Hari forest during search operations. Eight AK-56 rifles, four sniper rifles, 18 magazines, one rocket launcher, one wireless set and 2,580 rounds were recovered during these operations.

He said forces averted a major tragedy when they defused a powerful improvised explosive device in the famous Hishat Garde on the bank of the Dal lake on Tuesday evening.

He said militants shot dead Abdul Rashid Seikh at Kanoan last evening. However, an attempt to kidnap a contractor, Iftikhar Ahmad Zarga, was foiled by some labourers at Brain Nishat on Wednesday. They overpowered an armed man, identified as Fayaz Ahmad Khan, and handed him over to the forces.
