Britain to extradite Urea scam accused

The main accused in the Rs 1.33 billion urea scam case, A E Pinto, is likely to be extradited from Britain shortly for facing trial in New Delhi, Central Bureau of Investigation sources revealed.

Pinto, a Brazilian national who allegedly brokered the urea import deal with the Turkish firm Karsan Ltd, was arrested by Scotland Yard sleuths in December. He had not challenged the extradition order passed by a British court. The time for appeal has now lapsed.

One of the nine named in the chargesheet filed by the CBI on December 26, Pinto is alleged to have received $ 1.2 million from the urea deal.

The accused are: B Sanjeeva Rao, a relative of former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao, C K Ramakrishnan, former managing director of the National Fertilizers Ltd, D S Kanwar, former NFL executive director, Tuncay Alankus and Chihan Karanci, top officials of the Karsan Ltd, Sambasiva Rao of Hyderabad, the Indian agent of the Turkish firm, Prakash Chandra Yadav, son of former Union Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister Ram Lakhan Singh Yadav, and D Mallesham Goud of Hyderabad.

Pinto is the only foreign national, and yet to be arrested by the CBI.
