ED arrests ex-minister for FERA violation of Rs 11 mn

Former Union minister S Krishna Kumar was today arrested by the Enforcement Directorate for allegedly violating FERA.

The bureaucrat-turned-politician was taken into custody after five hours of interrogation by senior officials of the directorate, who grilled him about FERA violations of over Rs 11 million during 1991-94.

According to official sources, the directorate's investigation, conducted on the basis of information received from the income-tax department, has prima facie indicated that the former minister's family members had allegedly received remittances to the tune of Rs 1,10,78,000 from the United Arab Emirates between 1991 and 1994.

The investigation revealed that a sum of $ 60,000 was spent on the education of Krishna Kumar's son, Adarsh, who studied at Georgetown University in the United States from 1992 to 1996.

The directorate has also accused Krishna Kumar of receiving 60,000 dirhams in the UAE during an official visit.
