Summer deaths reach 142

The heat wave sweeping most parts of the country claimed 31 more lives overnight, taking the total toll to 142.

Seventeen people died in Uttar Pradesh where Orai, which along with Dholpur in Rajasthan, recorded the country's highest day temperature of 49 degrees celsius.

Thirteen people died in Rajasthan, thus taking the death toll there to 61. Seven people died in Alwar, while one death each was reported from Kota and Bundi districts. Three people, including a woman, died at Kaunthara village in Bharatpur district. Another died in Amet town in Rajasamand district.

In Tamil Nadu, the blistering heat claimed its first victim at Cuddalore with the death of a 55-year-old woman.

The weather office in Lucknow said day temperatures fell appreciably in Gorakhpur, Faizabad and Varanasi divisions, but changed little elsewhere, confining people indoors.

Delhi continued to reel under the blazing sun with a maximum temperature of 45.6 degrees celsius for the second consecutive day.

The gruelling heat wave persisted menacingly in the north-west plains, too. The mercury touched 47.8 degrees celsius at Hisar in Haryana, the highest in the region.

Day temperatures were also appreciably above normal in parts of the hills of north madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, coastal and south interior Karnataka, Kerala, and above normal in Saurashtra, Kutch, Konkan, Goa and north interior Karnataka.

They were below normal in parts of Assam and Meghalaya, and normal over the rest of the country outside Arunachal Pradesh from where data was sparse.

Rain or thundershowers occurred at a few places in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Kerala and at isolated places in Assam, Meghalaya, Gangetic West Bengal, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, coastal Karnataka and south interior Karnataka.

Mainly dry weather prevailed over the rest of the country.

Rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places in the Andaman and Nicobar islands, Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, at a few places in Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Sikkim, Lakshadweep, and isolated places in coastal Orissa, Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, coastal Andhra Pradesh and interior Karnataka.

Mainly dry weather will prevail over the rest of the country.
