Trucks stay off road as economic blockade continues in Manipur

The movement of trucks carrying goods to Manipur along the two national highways connecting Imphal with the rest of the country remained crippled for the fifth day, following an economic blockade imposed by several organisations.

Despite government efforts to resolve the matter, truck operators belonging to the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union refused to ply in view of the government's 'failure to provide adequate security'.

The indefinite economic blockade on national highway 39, which connects Assam with the Indo-Myanmar border via Imphal, was imposed on May 21 by the students community of Senapati district.

Their demands include recognition and upgradation of existing schools in the district, execution of developmental works and welfare measures.
