Heat wave rages in Rajasthan, one killed

The intense heat wave sweeping almost the entire Rajasthan for the past two days claimed its first victim in Jaipur, even as the mercury touched 47 degrees celsius in Dholpur and Phalodi towns.

Police said a man, found lying unconscious near the Jaipur railway station, was rushed to the S M S hospital where he died.

Weather office sources said severe heat wave conditions continued unabated in the entire state during the past 24 hours. The maximum temperatures recorded a rise of one to four degrees celsius.

Besides Phalodi and Dholpur, the day temperatures in Jhalawar, Sawai, Madhopur, Barmer, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and Churu towns all touched 46 degrees celsius Friday evening.

The situation in Bharatpur, Kota, Banswara, Bikaner and Ganganagar was also not much different -- the towns recorded a maximum temperature of 45 degrees celsius Friday evening.

Tonk, Jaipur, Pilani and Sikar recorded a maximum of 44 degrees celsius. Dabok (Udaipur), Chittorgar and Ajmer touched 43 degrees celsius.

No station, except Mount Abu recorded maximum temperatures less than 43 degrees celsius on Friday. It was 36 degrees celsius at the only hill station in the state.

Day temperatures were also appreciably above normal in some parts of Assam, Meghalaya, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and coastal Karnataka, and above normal in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Orissa, Konkan and Goa.

They were markedly below or normal in parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and below normal in parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telengana.

They were normal over the rest of the country outside Arunachal Pradesh from where data was sparse.

Rain or thundershowers occurred at most places in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, at many places in coastal Karnataka, at a few places in south interior Karnataka and Lakshadweep, and at isolated places in Andaman and Nicobar islands and Madhya Maharashtra.

Mainly dry weather prevailed over the rest of the country.

Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places in Tamil Nadu and Kerala during the next 48 hours.

Rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places in Andaman and Nicobar islands, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Lakshadweep, at a few places in coastal and south interior Karnataka and at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar plains, South Konkan and Goa, South Madhya Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and north interior Karnataka.

Mainly dry weather will prevail over the rest of the country.
