US invites Fernandes over to explore possibilities

US Secretary of Defence William S Cohen has invited Defence Minister George Fernandes to visit the United States.

In a letter to Fernandes, Cohen has said the visit would help in ''exploring the outlook for bilateral relationship.''

Cohen noted that the foundations for the relationship had been set over the past decade.

The military services of the two countries have been meeting, and conducting exercises and forging relations since 1991.

The Indo-US defence, science and technology establishments began annual meetings in 1995 to explore co-operative efforts.

The defence policy group was also set up in the same year as a high level civilian forum for overall guidance. The group is expected to hold its next meeting in Washington in July this year.
