Court notice to TN police on Jaya's request to merge cases

Special Judge P Anbazhagan, trying corruption cases against the previous All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime in Tamil Nadu, has ordered notice to the state crime branch on a petition filed by former chief minister J Jayalalitha seeking a direction to merge the Tansi land acquisition, Sasi Enterprises and R R Industries cases against her.

The notice is returnable by June 19.

In her petition, Jayalalitha contended that though only one charge had been registered, three independent cases were filed relating to the purchase of land by Jaya Publications, Sasi Enterprises and RR Industries.

The crime branch had filed two cases in the Tansi land deal relating to Jaya Publications and Sasi Enterprises. In both, the accused were the same, Jayalalitha said.

She argued that the cases were registered due to political reasons.
