Rabri's brother to stand trail for assault on JNU studentsA Delhi court has committed Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi's brother Sadhu Yadav to stand trial for assaulting some Jawaharlal Nehru University students, who were protesting against the killing of former student union president Chandrashekhar Prasad, in March 1997. The order was passed by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Prem Kumar before whom the Central Bureau of Investigation filed a chargesheet. While the CBI had charged Sadhu Yadav only under sections 147, 148, 149 and 223 of the Indian Penal Code, the CMM, after going through the case diary, also framed charges under section 307 of the IPC. Kumar, while taking cognisance of the case, said, ''It is not necessary that the injury should have been actually committed. The act was done in such a manner as would have constituted to the act of murder.'' On March 31, 1997, some JNU students came to the Bihar Niwas in the capital to protest against the killing of their ex-president and seek assurance from then chief minister Laloo Prasad Yadav, who was camping there, to take stern action against the killers. While the students were waiting to meet the chief minister, Sadhu Yadav, along with about 10 supporters, came out armed with iron rods and sticks, abused and provoked the students, and attacked them, causing injuries, the chargesheet said. It is also alleged that Sadhu Yadav had snatched a rifle from one of the police personnel and opened fire on the agitating students. UNI
