Khurana plans legal action against CBI

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Madan Lal Khurana said he was contemplating legal action against the Central Bureau of Investigation for the 'mental agony and torture' he had suffered after being 'framed' in the hawala scandal.

Reacting to media reports that he had been given a clean chit by the courts in the case, Khurana said that he had in fact been cleared of charges on May 15, 1997. Yesterday the CBI, which had all along been maintaining that they had enough evidence to nail him down, said that they had no proof, he said.

''I was not freed yesterday. I was freed in May 1997. But the mental agony, torture, insult and humiliation that I faced all this time, had stained my reputation.''

He said that two years ago the CBI had appealed against the court judgment but yesterday they said they wanted to take back their case.

''I am consulting my legal advisors. Let us see what they will tell me.''

Asked whether that the CBI acted with political motives, he said that, in some cases, the agency had acted with vendetta. ''That is not the case with everybody. It does not mean that the organisation should be wound up.''

The minister said he contemplated legal action only to prevent the recurrence of such cases.
