ELECTIONS '98

Digvijay Singh may continue, Madam rulesCongress president Sonia Gandhi has decided to let Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh rule on. Congress general secretary Oscar Fernandes on Wednesday announced that Sonia had taken this position after reviewing the situation in Madhya Pradesh and holding consultations with various party officials. It is not necessary to change the leadership of the MP government at this juncture, Fernandes said. There was speculation that Singh might be replaced following the party's debacle in the recent Lok Sabha poll. A committee headed by Rajesh Pilot recently submitted a report to the party president after an on-the-spot study. Digvijay Singh had a meeting with Sonia on Sunday, wherein he explained his position and the prevailing situation in the state. Meanwhile, the chief minister said he stood by his commitment to Sonia to ensure the party's victory in the assembly election, scheduled later this year. If he failed in his promise, he would neither hold any position in the party nor seek a ticket ever -- he would serve the party as a loyal soldier. UNI
