AGP-led govt loses a coalition partner

The United Minority Front in Assam has withdrawn its conditional support to the Asom Gana Parishad-led coalition government for its alleged failure to ensure the welfare of minorities there.

The decision has been approved by the party's state executive and state council in meetings held in Guwahati on May 3 and 4.

Party general secretary Bhimsen Sinha said the AGP-led government had shown disregard for minorities by not providing reasonable funds to the Char Areas Development Authority and Minority Development Financial Corporation.

Adopting a resolution, the meeting directed the leader of the party's legislative wing to communicate the decision to all concerned, including the leader of the Opposition.

The party has also decided to oppose moves from all quarters to repeal the Migration (determination by tribunal) Act, 1983, Sinha added.
