BJP jamboree ends with call to consolidate power

The Bharatiya Janata Party's two-day national council meeting ended in Gandhinagar on Monday with a firm resolve to consolidate power at the Centre by fulfilling promises made to the people in the Lok Sabha elections.

The party's resolve was reflected in the political resolution which was adopted unanimously after certain amendments.

''On the eve of the general election, we had appealed to the people to repose faith in us. We resolve to honour their mandate and fulfil their aspirations,'' the resolution said.

The national council called upon the rank and file to face the challenge and seize the opportunity. "The challenge lies in meeting the multiple crises facing the nation resolutely and with determination. The opportunity lies in initiating policies and programmes that will make this regime an epoch-making government.

''We are now seen as a national alternative. Let us prove that this alternative is far better than the one that has brought the country to its present perilous situation, the Congress.''

In his valedictory address, Prime Minister A B Vajpayee implored the party cadre not to rest on their laurels because they have captured power at the Centre.

''The task before us, '' he said, ''is to fulfill promises made to the people.''
