The designated Terrorist And Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act court in Pune has convicted four hardcore Punjab terrorists of a conspiracy to kidnap former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao's grand-daughter and sentenced them to rigorous imprisonment ranging from five to eight years.

The court passed its judgment on March 20 after a protracted trial, a Central Bureau of Investigation statement said on Wednesday.

The CBI had in its chargesheet, filed in September 1992, charged Rajbir Singh, Harminder Singh alias Totoo, Tarlok Singh alias Baba, Deepak Shukla and others with conspiring to kidnap Rao's grand-daughter from the Bharatiya Vidya Peeth, Pune, in order to pressurise the government to release notorious terrorist Harjinder Singh Jinda, who was sentenced to death in the Pune jail for assassinating General A S Vaidya.

The accused, in pursuance of their conspiracy, collected firearms and attempted to kill police personnel on duty to execute their plan. However, the plan was foiled.

The court sentenced Rajbir Singh to undergo rigorous imprisonment for eight years, Harminder Singh to five years, Tarlok Singh to seven years and Deepak Shukla to five years, under section 5 of the TADA and section 25 of the Arms Act.
