Advocate urges PM to revive Jain Commission
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been urged to immediately revive the Jain Commission of inquiry, which probed the conspiracy aspect of the Rajiv Gandhi assassination, and grant it an extension of two months as sought by Justice M C Jain. Environmental and legal activist Dr B L Wadehra, a party before the Jain Commission which folded up recently after functioning for six-and-a-half years, urged the prime minister also to supply documents and files which have been asked for but which were not supplied to Justice Jain. Dr Wadehra reminded Vajpayee of his stand on the Gujral government's refusal to grant the commission two month's extension, and also that he had asked the Gujral government to make public the reasons why the commission had asked for an extension and why the Gujral government had refused it. In a letter, the advocate urged Vajpayee to immediately institute an inquiry regarding the Gujral government's non-co-operation and the missing files. The Jain Commission had promised to submit its final report by February 28, but it could not do so because the Gujral government provided it certain material and documents only in February. The Commission was hence justified in asking for a two-month extension as it had to go through these documents, he said. UNI
