UF should support Congress: Basu

West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu on Saturday said the United Front should support a Congress government at the Centre to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party from coming to power.

In an interview with a private television channel, he said as the Congress has more seats than the UF, the Front should support it.

Basu said United Front convener N Chandrababu Naidu should change his mind about the Congress.

''We know the Congress is his main Opposition in Andhra Pradesh but he is the convener of the UF for the country, not his state alone,'' the chief minister reasoned.

He said he did not want to be the prime minister anymore.

''I had said earlier that I would not shirk the responsibility. But in the current situation and considering my health, I do not want to be the prime minister. I have never said that before. This is the first time I am saying so,'' he said.
