HP chief minister quits

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh announced his resignation in the state assembly on Thursday afternoon.

Following this, Pro Tem Speaker Thakur Ram Lal adjourned the House sine die. Singh was to face a trust vote this evening.

The Congress government's decision comes in the wake of a split in former Union communications minister Sukh Ram's Himachal Vikas Congress. Two HVC MLAs joined the Bharatiya Janata Party yesterday.

Disclosing this, state BJP president and its legislative party leader Prem Kumar Dhumal said Mansa Ram from Larsog and M R Prakash from Balh had formed the Himachal Kranti Party and merged it with the BJP.

With their joining, the BJP's strength in the assembly has risen to 30. The HVC has now been left with two members.

The Congress has a strength of 31 members in the House which has an effective strength of 64 members.
