Sharief seeks early summit with new PM

Sonny Abraham in Dubai

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief has told a Dubai newspaper that he would like an early summit meeting with India's new prime minister to resolve the Kashmir issue.

"We should sit down and talk and resolve outstanding issues," the Khaleej Times quoted him as saying in an interview.

"Kashmir being the number one issue, we should try to resolve it first. Otherwise, there are no problems," he told the newspaper.

According to the report, Sharief said he was willing to 'do business' with whoever was sworn in as India's next prime minister.

He said Pakistan's position on the problems between the two countries remained the same and he blamed India for the breakdown in the talks initiated by him and Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral.

The report said Sharief wanted India to make some gestures, "in terms of withdrawing some troops and observing human rights" in Kashmir.
