ELECTIONS '96

BJP ruled on division of votes in Gorakhpur-Basti area

The division of votes between the Bahujan Samaj Party and Samajwadi Party enabled the Bharatiya Janata Party to win eight of the nine parliamentary seats in Gorakhpur and Basti divisions in the general election.

The SP managed to wrest only the Deoria seat from the BJP in this belt.

According to figures available at the election office, the BJP polled lesser votes than the combined votes polled by the BSP and SP in almost all the constituencies. The presence of the Janata Dal candidate, a partner in the United Front, aided the BJP candidate's victory.

The Congress, with its decimal show in both divisions, also helped the BJP to sweep the region.

In Gorakhpur, BJP candidate Adityanath polled 268,428 votes while the BSP and the SP combined polled 327,504 votes. The Congress candidate got 22,561 votes. For the Bansgaon (reserved) seat, Raj Narayan Paswan polled 217,433 votes but on the other hand, the BSP and SP unitedly polled 335,592 votes.

In Deoria, however, the BJP lost to SP candidate Mohan Singh by 4,068 votes, polling 255,736 votes.

In Maharajganj, the division of votes among the BSP, JD and SP, which collectively polled 385,849 votes, helped BJP nominee and sitting MP Pankaj Chowdhary win by 233,361 votes.

In Padrauna, though BJP candidate Ram Nagina Mishra polled 256,695 votes; Baleshwar Yadav (SP) and Ravi Prakash (BSP) together polled 337,754 votes. The JD secured 10,338 votes.

In Khailabad, the presence of BSP, JD and SP candidates assured the BJP of an easy win. All three candidates combined collected 484,132 votes, while the BJP candidate won the seat, polling only 197,149 votes.

In Basti, the BJP secured 244,223 votes against BSP and SP candidates who collectively polled 317,054 votes. Likewise, in Dumariaganj, the BJP got 250,569 votes against the SP and the BSP candidates who collected 338,200 votes.

In 1996, the BJP managed five seats, the SP three, and the JD one, in this region. This time the SP could manage only the Deoria seat. The SP lost its Bansgaon and Salempur seats while the JD lost its Khalilabad seat.

The Congress lost its deposits in all nine seats.
